Introduction to Philosophy
(Objective: 1) To acquaint the student with the major areas in philosophy 2) To
bring out the relevance of philosophy by introducing some aspects of theoretical
and applied ethics.
Weightage of units: 12 lectures per unit)
Term I
Unit 1: (a) The definitions, nature and scope of Philosophy
(b) Introduction to the branches of Philosophy
(c) Value of Philosophy
Unit 2 : Methods of Philosophy :
(a) Doubt(Descartes),
(b)Dialogue(Socrates, Plato),

(b) Introduction to the systems of Indian Philosophy (Overview of the
three heterodox and six orthodox systems of Indian Philosophy)
Unit 4: Introduction to Western Epistemology and Metaphysics :
(a) Knowledge as Justified true belief
(b) Theories of reality: Idealism (Plato, Berkeley), Materialism
(Democritus), Dualism(Descartes).
(c) Causation (Aristotle, Hume)
Term II
Unit 5: Theory of values:
(a) What is value? Nature and kinds of values
(b) Basic ethical concepts: Good, Right, Duty, Virtue
(c) Theories of morality: Teleological: Hedonism, Egoistic and
Universalistic; Deontological: Categorical imperative
Unit 6: Major concepts in Indian Moral Thought: Rta, Rna, Dharma, Karma,
Niskama Karma, Purusartha, Preyas and Sreyas
Unit 7 : (a)Socio-political concepts: Right, Duty, Obligation, Freedom, Justice
(b)Theories of Punishment
Unit 8 : Professional Ethics
(a) The distinction between business and profession
(b) Moral duties and responsibilities of teachers, students, lawyers,
doctors, businessmen
