T.Y.B.A.(G3) : Relevance of Gandhi in the Contemporary World.
Syllabus
F.Y. B.A. course on Gandhian Thought:
G1 : Introduction to Gandhian Thought.
(Objective: To introduce to the student the life-sketch, personality and the thought
of Mahatma Gandhi. The approximate duration of each unit will be 12 lectures)
Term I : Life and personality of Gandhi.
Unit 1 : Sources of Gandhian thought :
(a) Indian : Upanishads, Gita, Jainism
(b) Western : Bible, Ruskin, Tolstoy, Thoreau.
Unit 2 : Biographical sketch and personality :
(a) Gandhi’s role as social reformer, Political leader, Satyagrahi and Spiritual
revolutionary.
(b) Personality of Gandhi: Consistency between thought and action, fearlessness, selfrespect,
emphasis on spirituality, tolerance, humility, economy in the use
of resources, strictness in discipline and justice, innovative attitude.
Unit 3 : Satyagraha
I) Meaning of Satyagraha : Individual Satyagraha and Mass
Satyagraha
II) Techniques of Satyagraha ( Non–co-operation, Civil
Disobedience, Boycott, Fasting )
III) Ideal Satyagrahi
Unit 4 : Satyagraha movements led by Gandhi :
(a) Satyagraha in South Africa
(b) Satyagraha in India(Champaranya, Kheda, Bardoli, Ahmedabad,
Dandi )
Term II : Basic concepts in Gandhian Thought
Unit 5 : Religious ideas:
(a) Concepts of God, Truth and Salvation
(b) Views on faith and intuition (Inner Voice)
(c) Sarvadharmasamabhava
Unit 6 : Moral Thought:
(a) Doctrine of Means and ends ( Purity of means),
(b) Truth, Non-violence and other Vratas (Ekadasa-vrata)
(c) Seven social sins
(d) Anasaktiyoga
Unit 7 : Social Thought:
(a) Gandhiji’s views on Varna, Caste and Status of Women
(b) Svaraj and Ramrajya
(c) Doctrine of Sarvodaya,
(d) Critique of Modern Civilization.
Unit 8 : Educational thought:
(a) Individual and social aims of education
(b) Basic education and its various components
